TV Ratings Notes For Monday, January 21, 2013: The Following (FOX) and Deception (NBC)

The highly promoted, The Following, FOX's one ray of hope in the drama landscape, finally premiered last night.  Of course, the subject matter is disturbing, and it is hardly the kind of material a network would want as its flagship scripted drama.  However, based on the premiere, that's likely how it's going to go for them.  LOL FOX, I guess.

The Following (FOX, Mondays at 9pm ET)

10.38 million Overall Viewers
3.1/7 in the 18-49 Demo

Those are pretty outstanding numbers for the premiere of The Following.  The problem, of course, is that we've seen these kind of numbers for most of the "good" premieres for FOX over the last couple of seasons.  I'm pretty sure both Touch and Alcatraz got pretty close to, or beat, these numbers, and we know what happened to them.

Last night, I watched the long trailer, after watching the episode, and the trailer hit all the proper beats, tones, etc., so if people came to the show because of that trailer, it's not likely they'll leave.  There was one very disturbing scene (in addition to several other slightly less disturbing scenes), a place they shouldn't have gone, that could easily polarize a good portion of the audience from watching future episodes.  I'll be very interested to see how the show does in the coming weeks.  It was a solid Pilot, and I'll most likely be watching it for the duration.  A lot of series have let us down, after the Pilot, recently (Last Resort, anyone?), but I don't think this will suffer the same fate.  It felt to me like the future has been thought out at least as thoroughly as Alcatraz's was, and that's easily considered a strong positive for the show.  The subject matter is not appealing, but it's a show worth checking out if you can handle the content.

Deception (NBC, Mondays at 10pm ET)

3.61 million Overall Viewers
1.3/3 in the 18-49 Demo

It's decision time for me with the show, and it looks like many other people already made their decisions, as the show continues to hemorrhage viewers.  My wife and I decided that if we don't like last night's episode, we're quitting the show.  The show looks really nice, but it's so damn boring, we really don't think we're going to stick with it.  So, it's on the clock for us, and we'll be watching it tonight to see the verdict.  As for its renewal prospects, they're gone.  The show is dead.  Love up on it while you can.  It didn't look like a good premise, to start with, and it's lived up to those expectations.  Thanks for reading.
